Dover – Halloween is a special fall tradition, but many are unaware that it has become known as much for impaired driving crashes as it has for trick-or treating by children. Many adults now dress up too, going to house parties or local restaurants and bars which have special activities. Unfortunately, too many adults choose to drink alcohol at these events and then drive. In fact, in 2008, 58% of all highway fatalities nationwide on Halloween night were alcohol-related. That’s why the Office of Highway Safety is stepping up planned DUI enforcement activities under the 2009 Checkpoint Strikeforce campaign this weekend...

Dover – Car crashes continue to be the leading cause of death for teenagers, killing nearly 5,000 of our youngest drivers every year. The primary factors leading to these fatal crashes are inexperience, speed, and distractions, particularly those created by other teen passengers. But studies by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) show that teens who said their parents set clear rules, paid attention to where they were going and with who and did so in a supportive way, were half as likely to crash, twice as likely to buckle up, 71% less likely to drive while intoxicated, and 30% less likely to use a cell phone while driving...

Dover – Here is an important safety alert for parents and grandparents of 8 – 12 year old children in Delaware: If you allow your children to sit in the front seat of a vehicle, it’s not only against the law but they are also 40% more likely to be injured in a crash than if they had been sitting in the back seat! Observational surveys as well as national research also highlight a disturbing trend among 8 – 12 year old children, also referred to as 'tweens'. That trend shows these young children are riding unsafely in the front seat, and nearly half of them who are killed as well as more than a quarter of them who are injured, are completely unrestrained regardless of seating position...

The February enforcement and awareness effort focused on increasing seat belt use at night, because seat belt use is 10% lower at night in the First State than during the day time.
